AL Mirani Fort
Location: Muscat, Oman
Client: The Sultanate of Oman
Contractors: Al Manar International L.L.C.
Consultant: Constell Consultants Pvt. Ltd.
Fort Al Mirani is a fort in the harbour of the city of Old Muscat, Oman. On showing signs of decay and distress, it was restored to its original majesty as part of a concerted renovation program.
The surrounding saline weather conditions and numerous rainwater discharge points had caused adverse weathering and erosion with time.
The Sultanate commissioned Atkins International and later Constell Consultants India to prepare a report on protection of the fort and to suggest long term performance monitoring. The purpose was to identify weak rock conditions in the foundation that required rock-stabilizing work. Al Manar of Oman was entrusted with the work of rock stabilizing of the foundation using various methods including pressure grouting, rock bolting etc.
A monitoring system was planned by the consultants to ensure success of the proposed rock-stabilization work. Encardio-rite was given the task for monitoring the supply of instruments, installation, manual and automatic monitoring along with monitoring the online data management systems as well.
The slope stabilizing work and the instrumentation was only done on the east side towards the palace (zone 1) and south side facing the mosque (zone 2). To monitor performance before and after pressure grouting, rock bolting etc., instruments used included in-place inclinometers, piezometers, tilt meters, beam sensors, borehole extensometer, temperature meters and an automatic data acquisition system.
